What is the Dominican Activities Centre?

The little town of Huissen lies in the 'Betuwe' between Arnhem and Nijmegen, not far from the Dutch-German border. The Dominican Monastery with its Centre of Activities (DAC) stands on the dyke near the banks of the Rhine. The old building is popular with concerns liking to hold their meetings and give instruction undisturbed. Young people find their way to the Youth Centre 'Onder de Pannen' ('Safety under cover') in the former monastery bakery/laundry. The monastery community (11 persons) regularly receives guests who wish for a time of reflection and leave their fax-machines, laptops and mobile phones behind. In addition the DAC offers courses in the field of questions relating to philosophy and meaning of life.

Art and Monasteries in Greece
A cultural trip: 22nd - 31st May 2004


Location Orthodox Academy Dimitrias in Volos, from there excursions to the Meteora Monasteries, to the Nuns Convent Anatoli Agia on the Mount Kissavos, 2-day stay in an international community for women.

Intention Getting acquainted with different forms of Greek Orthodox Religious Art: Icons - Folkart - Byzantine Painting of Icons - meeting people in the monasteries and churches - celebration of the Orthodox Pentecost.

Group leaders Martina Heinrichs, theologian, Head of Studies of DAC/Netherlands; Katarina Karkala-Zorba, theologian and Head of Studies of the Orthodox Academy Dimitrias in Volos/Greece.

Preparation of the trip Getting to know one another: 27th March 2004 (14 - 17h in the DAC), programme in detail, general arrangements.

Flight Reservations made by the DAC as a group trip, not obligatory: Dusseldorf - Thessaloniki - Dusseldorf: 15 seats are reserved. Please let us know if you want to travel with the group or alone.
Cost: approx. 310, euro- incl. airport taxes.

*A for singles with an income up to 750,- euronet per month and for partners with a total income up to 1.000, euro - per month. Programme

Saturday 22nd May
Flight Dusseldorf- Thessaloniki with Olympic Airways, by coach to Volos (hotel or academy).
Evening meal.

Sunday 23rd May
a.m. Orthodox Liturgy in the St. Nikolaos Cathedral at Volos, visit to the diocesan Congress Centre.
Welcome, introduction to the program in the Congress Centre.
p.m. Introduction to local Church History, walk around Volos, free time.
Evening meal in the parish of St. Ekaterini.
Folklore dancing.

Monday 24th May
a.m. Day trip to East-Pelion.
Visit to the village of Millies, the church of the Archangel with wonderful icon wall paintings, and the historical library, Mount Pelion.
p.m. Visit to Tsangarada, Kissos and Agios Joannis
(Coffee-break on the beach); visit to the village of Zagora: 16th and 17th Century churches
(Icon wall-paintings); back to Volos.
Evening free time or group discussion.

Tuesday 25th May
a.m Second introduction to Greek Orthodoxy and its traditions (Conference Centre Thessalia); Lunch.
Visit to the villages of Makrinitsa and Portaria on the Mount Pelion; Visit to the local gallery Father Theophilo
Evening meal in Makrinitsa.

Wednesday 26th May
a.m Getting to know the spiritual centres of the diocese: radio, schools, workshops for icon-painting...
Lunch in Volos.
p.m Visit to the cave church of the Mother of God at Volos, then on to the monastery of St. John, and to the monastery of the Archangel on Mount Pelion.
Guided tour of the monastery, visit to the icon and dressmaking workshops.

Thursday 27th May
Excursion to Almyros and Nea Achialos, visit to the historical monastery Panagia Xenia with the ancient Icon of the Mother of God.
Lunch with the parish of St. Dimitrios at Almyros
p.m Evening meal in Nea Achialos, walk through the historical Old Town.

Friday 28th May
a.m Free time; last day in in Volos.
Lunch.
Visit to church at Nea Ionia
p.m Evening meal.
Folklore-evening.

Saturday 29th May
Departure Volos.
Visit to the Cloister Community Meteora, and to the Monastery of St. John in Anatoli/Agia (at 1100m), stay until our departure from Greece.

Whit- Sunday 30th May
Getting to know the liturgy of the monastery, taking part in it, introduction to life in the monastery....

Whit-Monday 31st May
Departure.
