If throughout Greece the saturation of our daily individual and social life by the religious element is immediately obvious, this is even more intensely perceivable in our area.

Pelion is dotted with churches, monasteries and chapels, architectural masterpieces which preserve, throughout the passage of time, the piety of older and younger generations, as well the traditional color and style which is known as type of Mt Pelion. Many of these sacred places have a wonderful interior decoration with wood-carved iconostases of great value, with poétable icons, crosses and devotions which are magnificent. The large number of churches and monasteries gave to Pelion the character of the «Peliorite Holy Mountain», but time which conquers all things left some of these in ruins since they were abandoned by the monks, whereas the hundreds of chapels are touched by its corrosive power.

However the coordinated efforts which our Sacred Metropolis makes for the preservation of the monasteries and their rehabitation have born fruits. Five such little monasteries were saved during the last few years from destruction and new brotherhoods settled in them. They take care of them and give them life.

Besides the country chapels which belong to the nearest parishes of our villages have become the object of loving care of the qualified and with notable grants they are being maintained, repaired and they celebrate Masses, whereas new ones as well are constantly built furthermore enriching our already wealthy tradition.
