Personalities which our land gave birth to


Our area could be named a place of good men. Á whole multitude of notable men who distinguished themselves in academics, in arts, in politics, in the social realm, in national struggles, parades through our memory. They are immortal because they left traces of their passage. Amongst them are distinguished:

Regas Velestinlis or Feraios
Our national heroes: Regas Velestinlis, Kyriakos Basdekis, Marigo Skenderani, Margaret Basdeki, Lenio Kamenou, John of Filados, of the Society of Friends from Zagora, George Damesis also a Friend, Nicholas Filaretos from Promyri as well as the great ship captains from Trikkeri who fought in 1821 such as Kopsidakis, Lemonis,Koumbourelis, Vriniotis, Constantine Koutmakis etc.

The eminent scholars Zosimas of Esphigmenou, Daniel the Magnis, and Anthimos Gazis.

Teachers of the Nation: Gregory Konstantas, Daniel Phillipidis, the Ñatriarch Kallinicus the 3rd from Zagora.

Social workers and benefactors: Åvangelos and Sophocles Achillopoulos who gave money for the foundation of the Hospital of Volos, Í. Nanopoulos who offered money for the completion of the road which joined the railroad station at Milies with Tsagarada. Demetrios Polymeris who left his estate for works of social benefit to be done in Zagora, his homeland, Demetrios Kassavetis from Zagora, John Prigos from Zagora who founded its library, Ál. Ñantos from Zagora who founded the Ñanteios School, the Kritski brothers etc.

Our contemporaries: Cleanthis Triantafyllou or Attik from Tsagarada, Nicholas Pantazopoulos from Mouresi,Constantine Vourveris from Katichori,professor of History in the Faculty of Philosophy and founder of the Center for Human Studies in his village, G. Kaniskeris from Makryrahi who left money for roads and for an Orphanage, Demetrius a professor of Midwifery, the sculptor Nicholas from St.George Nileias, Nicholas Georgiadis from Portaria, Ál. Athanasakis also from Portaria who with his own money founded the Archaeological Museum of Volos, Pantazes Vasanis who left money for the foundation of the School to whom the village owes its water system and a wing of the «Annunciation» Hospital, Mr. Ê. Stournas from Alli Meria, Ál. Kassavetis from Zagora who founded the Juvenile Reformatory, K.Geskos a painter, Í. Gounaropoulos a painter etc.

Ôï all of them and to many others in the past and more recent this area owes many things and we gratitude.
