HISTORY

Here ancient Iolkos was the place where the Argonauts set out for Kolchida in their «Argo». The archaeologists place it at the present - day neighborhood «Palia» in Volos.
Here on Pilion the marriage of Pilea and Thetis took place.
Here is where the fight of centaurs between the centaurs and the Lapiths took place, and here the venerable Centaur Heiron lived who taught the art of medicine to Asklipios and brought up the blond Achilles and the daring Jason.

Én our area prehistoric settlements developed such as those which were discovered at Dimini and at Sesklo. Their age goes back to 7 thousand B.C. Findings from the digs which took place there, as well as other important objects from antiquity are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Volos. They all show that the first inhabitants of the area were vivacious, smart and dynamic. The landscape also helped in this which combines the communication by sea and the closeness with the shores of Asia Minor of Ionia just opposite. Civilization quickly marked this area, which is full of many voiceless but eloquent witnesses of the high level of life which develaped here. The ruins of the Acropolis which are preserved at the area , «Soros» a little outside of Volos, the ancient theatre of DEMETRIAS, which was a city between today's Alikes and Boumboulithra, the remnants of the ancient aqueduct etc. are such witnesses which speak out in the passing ages about the level of civilization of our ancestors.

In the west side of Velestino, the ancient Pherai, one of the most ancient and important town in Thessaly, already from 3.000 B.C., offer the chance to history -lovers to visit the prehistoric settlement (Magoula Bakali), the classical citadel,the relics of the walls, the ruins of the temple of Thaulios Zeus, the Yperia Krini, known from Homer's epics etc. Pherai being the hometown of the mythical king Admitos and Alkistis, more known as the birthplace of Regas,displays important archaelogical findings.
